Sexy
One of the least mentioned yet most hinted at elements of womanhood was that of feeling sexy. I didn't want to influence the responses I received, so I didn't probe much. But I am very curious to know if it wasn't mentioned because of inhibitions, or because it is simply an obvious part of the answers they did give. No one mentioned shoes as being sexy. Yet when they talked about the shoes they love to wear, it was always the sexy ones. No one mentioned slippers or hiking boots.
It seems (although I am not a fashion historian) that women from most cultures throughout time have dressed to flatter the figure. Women's clothing is almost always different than men's; emphasizing the bust and the hips. Why is that? Has it historically been driven by men wanting their women to flaunt it, or have the women been the designers in an attempt to lure the man? What about today? Has anything changed? Have women ever designed sexy clothes simply because they want to feel sexy for the sake of feeling sexy?
These questions are far beyond our little girl's realm of questioning. She simply watches this woman prepare for a night out with her guy. She holds a tube of mascara in hopes of being able to play make-up. At what age do we begin to dress up, play make-up, wear Mom's high heels? Almost from birth.
