I laughed for a long time about this one. I had originally made his mouth and nose too low. In giving him a face lift, there was so much black around where I was trying to reconstruct his mouth that I couldn't see the color I was putting on for all the color that was there before. So I just put anything down that would help me keep my visual focus.
There may be some painters who can just lay it all down right the first time, but I haven't met one yet. Although most may not have to do quite as much reconstructing as me ;-)

Here I'm working on getting the shape of the neck, chin and cheek correct. Not a lot of worry about color here, so just a matter of getting the correct shape and then blending in the right places to create soft edges and still leaving hard edges where they need to really define the shape. Lots and lots of ebb and flow.
