The sword, carried by the knight, serves as a defense. As long as he has his sword, he has a means to protect himself. Others who see the knight with his sword know that he is protected and refrain from attacking him.
We all have our swords. Some are defensive in nature. Others are offensive. The sword is often used to represent truth.
The hilt of the sword carries a mandala. The mandala originates from Hinduism and is also used in Buddism. It may seem out of place in the European setting of the knight, but symbolically it is a very accurate representation of him.
The mandala is a circular representation of the cosmos and through each level of the circles one can find deeper and deeper layers of himself. It is used in meditation practices, life planning, and creating a sacred space.
