This one is a commission so I'm a little nervous. What is in my head may not exactly match what is in hers. But, we've done a lot of homework together and I think it will work out pretty well.
I've decided to make this a process piece as well, so I'm documenting the process behind the painting. Some of it is impossible to record as it lies solely in my head but I'll do my best to put out here what I can.
The first thing we did is research paintings and photographs to see what kind of style and composition she wanted. She is looking for a floral for her bedroom. After I had a pretty good idea of what types of flowers and composition she wanted, we went to the hardware store and looked at paint samples. She chose the palette and we brought the color samples home.
Next we researched a little more to really narrow down the style she wanted. She had had several days to think about what we had done so far, so we were able to really talk about the look she wanted.
Finally we bought some flowers that she liked. I played with several arrangements and did quite an extensive photo shoot. She chose the final photograph, which I've included below:
We couldn't find the flowers in the colors that she wanted, so I will have to make those adjustments on the canvas.
She wanted a double panel with gallery-wrapped edges. Here I have the flowers drawn on the canvases:
I also included a shot of my painting palette. I mix my colors from a very limited number of paints. I enjoy the process of mixing paints and I find I can create the colors I want from basic red, yellow and blue easier than trying to find just the right color of paint in a tube or trying to change a color that is "kind of close".
It's been an enjoyable day getting the piece started. The initial work is always the hardest part. Painting is the fun stuff!
