Back to Front - Sort Of

As a general rule I paint back to front - background first, then middle ground, and finally foreground. However, in this painting the faces are a bit daunting, so I'm starting with the areas of background immediately around the face. Then I'll put in the faces, and finally move back to front on the rest of the canvas.

Both the top of the robe and the upholstery on the chair are crushed velvet. It will be a little tricky to get the look, but I'm of to a fairly good start with the robe.

I am very intrigued by the scene...is it a historic piece or just something you see?

The scene is an image I've had in my mind for some time. The theme will begin to unfold as the painting unfolds. So... keep checking in to get the whole story!
